Wood Betony (Betonica officinalis) can be found throughout Europe. The plant has crimson flowers and basal leaves. The herb, including the basal leaves can be used for medicinal purposes. Wood Betony is also known as Bishopswort. It contains betaine, caffeic acid derivitives (chlorogenic acid, isochlorogenic acid, rosemary acid iridoid glycosides), iridoids (iridoid glycosides like harpagide), and flavonoids. The herb has been used as an astrigent, sedative, and expectorant. Wood Betony is a remedy for coughs, broncitis, asthma, anxiety, bladder and kidney stones, and inflammation of the bladder.
