Schisandra (Schisandra chinensis) is indigenous to northeastern China and Korea. It is a member of the Schisandraceae family. The fruit of the schisandra plant can be used medicinally. The fruit has a hot, bitter, sweet taste. A variety of active constituents including scizandram schizandrols, gomisins, schizandrers, schisantherins, wuweizisus, and many others, collectively known as lignans, have been isolated from schisandra. The plant has demonstrated anti-inflammatory and antioxidant abilities. Schisandra improves liver function by increasing hepatic glutathione, glucose-6-phosphate, and glutathione-glycogen activity. Other schisandra lignan properties include antitussive, antifatigue, respiratory stimulant, and anticonvulsant.
