Sweet Annie (Artemisia annua) is a member of the Asteraceae/Compositae family. The above ground parts are typically used for medicinal purposes. Sweet Annie contains sesquiterpene lactones; artemisinin (qinghaosu) is one of the main active constituents. It also contains quercetagetin 6,7,3',4'-tetramethyl ether. Sweet Annie has shown antimalarial, anti-inflammatory, cytotoxic, antipyretic, and bacteriostatic properites. Sweet Annie also enhances immune system repsonses. It is used for a variety of ailments such as malaria, fever, jaundice, inflammation, auto-immune disorders, gastritis, circulatory disorders, common cold, constipation, gallbladder disorders, rheumatism, painful menstruation, and bacterial and fungal infections.
